Engine won’t start? Check your car for a broken crankshaft pulley bolt. You’ll know because your crankshaft pulley / harmonic balancer will be just hanging there by the belt.
For this repair we ordered a set of punches, a set of left-handed drill bits and an appropriate sized bolt extractor which we ended up not needing.
This seemed like an intimidating repair because of where it is and what it is. However, this bolt came out so easily. Granted, we had to remove a bunch of stuff to get to it, but it was mostly air intake / cooling / radiator stuff so not much of a big deal. Also, we soaked the bolt in PB Blaster overnight.
After we removed the bolt, we cleaned up around it and removed the camshaft seal and replaced it with a new one (forgot to film) and installed the new camshaft pulley / harmonic balancer.
The van started right up so we bled the coolant system and put it up for sale on craigslist. It sold the very next day. Phew!
